Dyestuff

Perkin’s range of dyestuffs comprises the following groups of dyes:

WILLIFAST and PERLAN Group of dyes

These are metal complex anionic dyes which give good level dyeings with excellent light and wet fastness properties.

PERICHROME and PERCID group of dyes

These are anionic dyes which offer a wide choice of fastness properties and are suitable for various qualities of leather.

BASIC LEATHER Group of dyes

These are cationic dyes which can normally be used for stopping over anionic dyes to give improved depth and brilliancy.

This is an illustration of a range of acid, metal complex (both 1:1 and 1:2), direct and basic dyes suitable for the dyeing of leather. The dyeings were carried out on chrome-tanned cow leather.

Commercial Form and Storage : The above dyestuffs are marketed in powder form and are storable indefinitely at temperatures below 50 deg. C/122 deg. F. Although they are not affected by frost, they must be stored away from moisture.

Dissolving: The dyes are best dissolved by pasting them with cold water, 1.5%( on the basis of the shaved wt. of the leather) of PERKINOSIST 764A and subsequent addition of hot water (90 deg.C/194 deg. F) with constant stirring and further dilution with water. For dissolving BASIC LEATHER dyestuffs, they are first pasted with equal amount of glacial acetic acid (99.9% purity) or formic acid and then diluted with warm water(55-60 deg.C) immediately. But under no circumstances, the solution should be boiled.

BRILIANCY AND PENETRATION: The use of 1.5 to 2.0%(on the basis of the shaved wt. of the leather) of PERKINOSISIT 764A, just prior to the addition of the dye into the drum is highly recommended TO GIVE AN IMPROVED BRILLIANCY TO THE SHADE AND BETTER PENETRATION OF THE DYE into the leather. The use of Perkinosist 764A also renders a better feel to the leather and can help upgrade the overall quality of the leather.

Precautions: Gradual or slow addition of the fully dissolved dye into the dye bath , is very much essential to obtain level dyeings. Addition at intervals of 5 minutes over a number of times, is often a good practice.
